How to play poker – top fundamental rules

Poker is a kind of gambling, united by a common name and similar (with rare exceptions) seniority of winning combinations. Usually five cards are dealt in poker. Players try to make combinations of two or more cards of the same value, a sequence of five cards or five cards of the same suit. Each card dealing is a separate game with its own pot, trading, and bets. Bets are placed in one circle or more, and the player with the highest combination gets the pot. Best poker games

Frankly speaking, the concept of the best poker games is different for every player. One will be into Texas Hold`em, another will be charmed by the simplicity of 5-Card Draw. Anyway, here is the list of the games compiled to highlight the variety of poker:

  • Texas Hold`em. The most common type of poker is Texas Hold`em. In this variation, each player receives only two cards at the beginning of the game. And the rest of the cards that are needed for the poker combinations are dealt later as common to all players.
  • Pot-limit Omaha. Omaha poker is a favorite game of the advanced players. The rules for playing Omaha are identical to the rules for playing Texas Hold’em, except some points.
  • 7-card Stud. In a seven-card Stud, players receive seven cards each, but five-card combinations are used to determine the winner.
  • Razz. This is a form of poker where players receive seven cards for a hand and the winner of the youngest low 5-card combination wins.
  • Omaha Hi-Lo. This is an Omaha variation where you can win half of the pot with a low combination.
  • 2-7 Triple Draw. This is a popular type of poker in which the winner is the owner of the lowest “low” combination.
  • 5-card Draw. One of the simplest form of poker. The main objective of the game is to collect the highest possible poker hand.
  • Chinese Poker. The main difference between Chinese poker is that the game is completely open.
  • Badugi Poker. This is a variation of draw poker. It has a lot in common with a Lowball, since the youngest hand also wins here. However, there are a lot of significant differences from the popular types of poker.

Meaningless Bets

A good poker player is aware of the purpose of each bet. There are all kinds of purposes – to get paid from weaker hands (this is called “for good”), to beat out stronger hands (this is a bluff), or to prevent your opponent from completing a hand (“to protect”). Beginner players often bet for nothing, without any purpose. Some just bet the minimum possible bet on each street without even a hint of a winning combination, others bet half the pot for nothing. All of this leads to losing money, if not in a particular hand, then certainly over the distance.

The most surprising example of pointless betting is over-betting an opponent’s preflop raise by half or two times (under-tribe). Let’s say Mikhail raises 200 chips in a 50/100 chip blind, which means he’s betting two big blinds. Vitaly, who’s sitting next to him, wants to bet more – that way he’ll either take the pot right away, increase the pot size to win more with his strong hand, or just stay with his opponent in a one-on-one hand.

Good players in such situations bet three or four times their initial bet, which in our example is 600-800 chips. Beginners can bet 300 chips, but it makes no sense – the pot won’t grow much, the first player will never flip a card, and it’s unlikely that any opponent at the table won’t enter the pot with a medium strength hand.
